Congressman Tom Garrett

Representing the 5th District of Virginia

Garrett Named to House Committees on Homeland Security, Foreign Affairs, Education and Workforce

Press Release

Washington, D.C. – This week the U.S. House of Representatives unveiled the latest selections for several highly coveted committee assignments in Congress.

Among these announcements was those of Virginia’s 5th District Congressman Tom Garrett being named to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, House Committee on Homeland Security, and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Upon news of these selections, Congressman Garrett issued the following statement:

“I am extremely honored to have been chosen to serve on these particular committees. Over the last several years, we have seen a rise in radical Islamic terrorism which threatens not only the security of our homeland, but the safety of our troops abroad and the geographical stability of our allies. Having served overseas as an officer in the United States Army, I understand firsthand the threats we face and am eager to get to work to continue improving our relationships on the global stage while protecting the sovereignty and safety of these United States.”

Garrett went on to address his selection to the Education and Workforce Committee by saying:

"Several of my proudest accomplishments in the Virginia Senate addressed K-12 reform and one of our platform issues from 2016 has been our Student Security plan to curb the student loan crisis - so to say I have a passion for education is an understatement. I look forward to working with my colleagues to improve the learning environment for our students and continue pushing control over our schools to the localities, where they understand the needs of our children better than Washington."
